If this VM is really causing issues you can simply stop it for a while, it's a Solaris 10 1/13 installation service so most of the time the VM is not needed; If you stop the VM then disable each related Nagios check to avoid to get the related warning e-mails.

Conversely if you're reading this because you've lost the Solaris 10 1/13 of a SUN X4540 then to get that SUN X4540 reinstalled you have:

  • to reenable the DHCP service in t3jumpstart01 by running svcadm enable dhcp-server
  • boot the target SUN X4540 and observe the PXE phase
  • once the PXE phase will be properly passed and you will see the Solaris installation going ahead then redisable the DHCP service by svcadm disable dhcp-server, otherwise the Solaris installation will loop forever!.

Installing JET

There are many websites describing "How To", look the previous Docs links, but in a nutshell:
  • you need a Solaris 10/13 .iso file
  • you have to install Solaris by using this .iso and also copy the whole .iso file into the Solaris installation that you made;
  • eventually you have to install the SUNWjet pkg and configure that according to your environment.

How to install a custom pkg

Often it's needed a custom pkg that's not present in the standard Solaris 10 installation; to make JET aware of it and to install it on the TARGET_HOST you have to:
  • run pkgtrans vs the pkg.
  • run copy_custom_packages
  • append the custom pkg in the field custom_packages of the template file associated to the TARGET_HOST
  • run /opt/SUNWjet/bin/make_client -f TARGET_HOST to get this change propagated up to the /opt/SUNWjet/Clients/TARGET_HOST dir.

e.g. to install the custom package SUNWhd on the TARGET_HOST t3fs07:

If the Solaris installation made by Jumpstart fails you'll still have a live shell in the target host; so you can inspect and correct the wrong files, or format the c0d0 disk, and try again the Solaris installation by:

Installing the Jet package

The SUNWjet package contains a lot of scripts which automate most things needed to set up the jumpstart server and client configurations.

  • Go to http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/jet/ and look for a download of "JumpStart Enterprise Toolkit" on the page
  • unzip and install the package
    pkgadd -d ./jet.pkg
    
  • You may want to add /opt/SUNWjet/bin and /opt/SUNWjet/man to the PATH and MANPATH.

Installing the DHCP service

You may need to install the SUNWdhcsr DHCP server package from a mounted cdrom. You can check the packages with pkgchk -l SUNWdhcsr.

Setting up the Solaris image

OBSOLETE STEP!!!

Use a script for setting up a basic install server

mkdir -p /export/install
cd /cdrom/sol_10_1009_x86/Solaris_10/Tools
setup_install_server /export/install
This would setup a folder /export/install/Solaris_10 containing the SW from the solaris image on the cd.

note: this copies the solaris release into the exported area (this is better done with the JET tool /opt/SUNWjet/bin/copy_solaris_media, see further below)

Jet configuration

Create an install area

mkdir -p /export/install/pkgs /export/install/patches /export/install/media 

make sure that the install area is exported over NFS. Add this line to /etc/dfs/dfstab.

share -F nfs -o ro,anon=0 /export/install

Make sure that the NFS server is enabled.

svcadm enable network/nfs/server

Install a Solaris release for the clients

Copy the Solaris distribution from the DVD to the install directory
copy_solaris_media -d /export/install/media/sol_10_1009_x86 -n s10x_u8wos_08a /cdrom/sol_10_1009_x86

The -n argument is the name (version string) under which the clients will have this Solaris release available.

configure the DHCP server

Jet comes with a mini script for setting up the DHCP server. You best copy the template to Jet's main executables path

Fill in the network details into the script template

The base configuration directives are described in /opt/SUNWjet/Products/base_config/ReleaseNotes. Additional customization directives are described in /opt/SUNWjet/Products/custom/ReleaseNotes.

The make_client command generates all the jumpstart config files for this client and makes it active in the dhcp configuration

/opt/SUNWjet/bin/make_client -f t3vm03

The command

  • writes the jumstart configuration files into /opt/SUNWjet/Clients/t3vm03
  • makes an entry into /etc/vfstab to make sure that the tftp service exports the relevant boot are
    /export/install/media/sol_10_1009_x86/boot - /tftpboot/I86PC.Solaris_10-2 lofs - yes ro
    
  • Populates the /tftpboot directory with files. Among them the specific grub menu.lst file for that client.

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure that no other DHCP servers interfere (in our case most probably the Linux main dhcp service on the admin node)
  • The trunked network interface configuration of the switches can interfere with the DHCP request, because the answer may be sent down on a line which is not the primary interface used by the client to make the request. Either have trunking turned off or better, activate LACP for these trunked connections (q.v. SwitchMappings)
  • It can happen that the redirected ILOM console for watching the client system boot becomes garbled. Restarting the console usually helps (and there is always the possibility using the direct monitoring connection in the computing center).

dhcp-server troubleshooting

Note that the JET make_client script also writes entries into the /etc/hosts file. When you later change a MAC to IP mapping, you must correct the hosts file by hand, or the scripts may still use the old IP assignment for this hostname!

Start the dhcp server interactively in debug mode. This will enable you to observe connection attempts.
