CMS Tier-3 News Item

All the t3wn will be migrated to SL6 by the end of Jan 2015

Summary

Both CMSSW and WLCG expects a SL6 T3 to properly work, so all the SL5 t3wn* will be reinstalled as SL6 t3wn*

Details

During the recent T3 Steering Board meeting held in Dec '14 at ETHZ the T3 users representative agreed about the migration of the current T3 to a full SL6 based T3 by the end of Jan 2015 ; the migration will silently happen behind the scenes without further notice from the T3 admins, the T3 users will just notice the shrinking of the SL5 t3wn* and the increasing of the SL6 t3wn*.

All the T3 users will have to migrate to the SL6 t3ui1* servers and submit their jobs only from there to validate their works on the SL6 t3wn*

Following the migration the old SL5 t3ui0* will be left as they are but the direct SSH connection from Internet will be prevented ; the T3 users will have to use a SL6 t3ui1* server as a bridge to login to a SL5 t3ui0* server.

Furthermore the SL5 t3ui0* HW maintenance won't be performed anymore ( no broken disks swapped, no broken RAM swapped, etc.. ) and we might use the SL5 t3ui0* HW components to repair a broken SL6 t3wn* since some of them run similar HW.
