Collection of useful information about git

ToDo for everyone (working on analysis code)

  1. create an account on GitHub https://github.com
  2. map your GitHub account with your CERN account https://cmsgit.web.cern.ch/cmsgit/cmsgit
  3. tell your analysis group about your account
  4. read the FAQs (see below)

Cloning the CMSSW git repository to T3 is very slow

This is because cloning does a lot of very small IO operations (almost worst case for the NFS); try to clone onto /scratch and then copy the entire directory to your home.

Technical Points

What is the space limit for repositories on GitHub?

Roughly 1 GB; see https://help.github.com/articles/what-is-my-disk-quota. If you have that much code it's maybe advantageous to split up into multiple repositories.

Do we need a central place to have a backuped copy of the our analysis code repositories?
