CMS Tier-3 News Item

/cvmfs/cms.cern.ch will replace /swshare/cms on Fri 21-11-2014 at 16:00

Summary

/cvmfs is the standard technology used in the CMS Grid to distribute each CMSSW releases around the world.

Details

The T3 admins have deployed /cvmfs, the standard technology used in the CMS Grid to transparently and efficiently distribute each CMSSW releases around the CMS Grid; on each t3wn* and t3ui* servers the T3 users will find the new directory /cvmfs/cms.cern.ch that offers all the CMSSW releases that they might need, both compiled for SL5 and SL6.

By introducing /cvmfs the T3 admins are also going to STOP to manually deploy any CMSSW release in /swshare/cms since that activity got useless now; a T3 user can still request to install a CMSSW release in /swshare/cms, but a such request must to be motivated, e.g. the user needs a CMSSW feature that's missing in the equivalent version installed in /cvmfs/cms.cern.ch

We request all the T3 users to read our /cvmfs doc, try /cvmfs both interactively and as batch jobs, and proactively report to the T3 users mailing list any error: without a negative feedback we'll permanently switch all the t3wn* and t3ui* servers to use by default /cvmfs on Fri 21-11-2014 at 16:00

As a final remark, all the existing directories in /swshare/cms will be preserved.
